Libera Me

Liberate my soul…

“Libera Me” is inspired by the Roman Catholic responsorial hymn of the same title, and service of prayers that is sung at the absolution of the dead immediately after the Requiem Mass and before burial. Just as the dead are buried in body, sometimes those who are living are buried in spirit. This piece reflects the deadness of the soul and spirit that can occur when we succumb to the many bondages often placed upon us whether by outward forces or self-inflicted. The movement reflects cycles of pain and the exhaustion of emotional and mental bondage. Libera Me questions the wavering human spirit and its ability to persevere.
