Dance for Theater
In this class, students will explore the fundamentals of musical theatre dance. Students will learn and execute movement exercises and dance phrases designed to increase knowledge of jazz dance and movement for actors. Through the use of jazz, modern, and tap dance, along with elements of ballet, students will learn Broadway style choreography, and the skill of dancing while singing and acting will be developed.
Broadway Dance
In this beginner-intermediate class, students will learn and execute the fundamentals of Broadway style dance by practicing movement exercises and dance phrases designed to increase knowledge of jazz dance and performance. This class includes dance techniques that further improve alignment, strength, flexibility, and coordination through an emphasis on style and rhythm. Students will also explore the structure of stage choreography, showmanship and performance.
Jazz Dance Fundamentals
This beginner-intermediate class introduces various styles of jazz dance movement including isolations, turns, kicks, and African-influenced polyrhythms. Working within a range of dynamic performance styles, students will learn fundamental dance skills and jazz vocabulary, from which more advanced skills can be developed. This class is designed for students with little or no dance experience.
Contemporary Movement
This beginning-intermediate class introduces students to the dynamic capabilities of the body as an articulate means of expression. Presents basic concepts and skills from contemporary dance forms that may include Afro-modern, floor work, inversion, classical modern and improvisation. Classwork develops efficient alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, rhythm, dynamics and spatial awareness. No experience necessary.
Modern Dance II
Geared toward the student with previous modern dance training and/or substantive training in another genre of dance, this intermediate-advanced modern dance class continues with the fundamental modern dance skills learned in the previous level and introduces more advanced contemporary techniques. This course includes floor work, inversion and improvisation, as well as rhythmic, isolated and expressive movement. Classwork will deepen students' alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, rhythm, dynamics and spatial awareness. The concepts of codified classical modern dance are explored, along with somatic awareness, efficient athleticism, and creative voice.
Modern Dance Fundamentals
This beginner-intermediate Modern dance class focuses on the study of basic movement principles, the elements of dance: space, time, and energy, and the refined fundamentals of modern dance. Codified modern techniques of modern dance pioneers such as Graham, Horton, Limon and Humphrey are introduced, and the nuances and intricacies of each codified technique is explored. The class begins with a Horton warm-up, and progresses to center floor work and dynamic across the floor exercises that incorporate Horton, Graham and Limon techniques.
Intermediate-Advanced Ballet
This intermediate to advanced level ballet class continues to refine classical ballet technique through barre, center work, and across the floor combinations. Dancers refine ballet fundamentals such as proper turn out, placement, and alignment. During center barre students focus on adagio and petit allegro, in order to build strength, flexibility, coordination and improved musicality. Epaulement is practiced and refined. This class emphasizes dancing and performing with rhythm and poise, artistic movement, and musical interpretation.
Beginner Ballet
This is a beginner course to classical ballet technique for students with some previous ballet training.
Students will learn the fundamentals of ballet, following the traditional structure of a ballet class with more emphasis on body posture and barre work. Through the use of barre exercises, center work and structured choreography, students will explore body alignment, strength, flexibility, and anatomical awareness of the dancer’s body to enhance understanding of movement. Center work is composed of port de bras and simple adagio, preparation for turns, preparation for waltzes, fundamental petit allegro and reverence.
Introductory Ballet
This is an introductory course to classical ballet technique for students with little to no ballet training.
All ballet fundamentals such as basic stance, foot positions, proper turnout, placement, alignment, and basic port de bras are introduced and refined. Through the use of barre exercises, across the floor and center work and structured choreography, students will explore body alignment, strength, flexibility, and anatomical awareness of the dancer’s body to enhance understanding of movement.
