Dance Narratives Workshop

Every person has a story to tell, and this class focuses on not only the technique and performance of dance, but the personal and self-expressive aspect of art in general. This workshop series involves the creation of oral narratives that form the conceptual foundation of the movement. The individual stories of participants that define this experience guide the movement creation. Although each participant will bring a unique set of stories to the class, the goal is to establish a macro thematic identity that will serve to balance the disparate individual movement styles. The Dance Narratives masterclass will provide participants an opportunity to express themselves through the art of dance, release, and compose personal narratives that are "told" through movement.

The workshop sessions include the formation of spoken word monologues, poetry, letters, drawings, and paintings, and involves the composition, teaching, performance, and release of a new, original dance work. The finished dance work will be a compelling movement record of these workshop sessions, combining personal and emotional narratives with experimental site-specific movement compositions. The final production may also feature photography, video, artwork, and hand-lettered items produced during the course of the workshop. The Dance Narratives workshop is a full multi-arts experience!
